GM Supports Improved Fuel Economy Standards GM is dedicated to improving vehicle fuel economy and being part of broader energy security and climate change solutions. During the last 30 years, we have doubled passenger car fleet fuel economy and increased light truck fleet fuel economy by 60 percent. In the last few years, we have:
But some remain fixated on increases in CAFE requirements as the way to push the industry further. As Congress continues to consider energy legislation this year, GM is working with all stakeholders to ensure realistic changes to the CAFE rules.
Currently, there's a CAFE proposal sponsored by U.S. Representatives Baron Hill (D-IN) and Lee Terry (R-NE) that enjoys widespread bipartisan support among more than 160 Members of Congress. The Hill-Terry CAFE bill stretches the auto industry to meet up to a 40 percent fuel economy increase in vehicles by 2022. But, it goes about this aggressive increase in a way that still maintains separate car and truck fleets and allows adequate time for automakers to meet the standards. It's an approach that helps the environment, protects the U.S. economy and jobs and recognizes that America's families and working class depend on light trucks for their daily needs.
Hill–Terry stretches the industry to meet tough targets, but does not break it in the process – unlike the extreme Senate-passed CAFE that combines cars and trucks and calls for a steeper increase in a shorter time. GM is willing to improve CAFE levels and meet this challenge while still preserving jobs and America's manufacturing competitiveness.
There is a lot at stake in Congress getting energy legislation right. Please call your U.S. Representative and Senators to let them know the livelihood of millions of autoworkers, retirees, and their families – as well as stockholder value – depends on balanced and realistic increases to fuel economy standards. The Hill-Terry CAFE bill is the better way.
Please call your member of Congress and tell them you support the Hill-Terry CAFE bill. You can call toll-free by dialing 1-866-927-2233 and, when prompted, enter your zip code. The automated system will match you to your Representative and connect you to their Capitol Hill offices.
